Cornea

Treatments for Corneal Disease

A wide array of treatments is available for corneal disease, also known as ocular surface disease. These options include glasses, custom contact lenses, over-the-counter eye drops, specially formulated medications, in-office laser surgery, and corneal transplantation. With extensive additional training in these areas, your cornea specialist will create a detailed, personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique condition.

How Does Corneal Transplant Surgery Work?

Corneal transplant surgery is a straightforward procedure that typically takes between half an hour to an hour. To ensure your comfort, you will receive a sedative to help you relax and anesthesia to numb the area around your eye. During the surgery, your surgeon will carefully remove the damaged portions of your cornea and replace them with clear, healthy donor tissue. Depending on the specific procedure, you may lie on your back for a period after the surgery to aid in your recovery.

What to Expect After Corneal Transplant Surgery

After your corneal transplant surgery, you will receive several eye drops to help minimize any swelling or discomfort. An eye patch will also be provided to protect your eye as it heals, preventing infections and sun damage.

If you are undergoing a partial corneal transplant (DMEK/DSEK), you may need to lie on your back for most of the first few days to ensure the transplant stays in place. With DMEK/DSEK surgery, your vision will typically recover more quickly than with conventional corneal transplantation, often stabilizing within three months.

Finding a Donor Cornea

Donor corneas are typically sourced from individuals who have generously donated their corneas after passing away, intending to restore vision for others. These corneas are procured from a nationwide eye bank and undergo rigorous screening to ensure their suitability for transplantation.
